IPI 25th anniversary
< BACK TO HOMEPAGE
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the International Initiative on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Pollinators (IPI).
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the IPI, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is spreading the word on global action in conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of pollinator diversity and their habitats, highlighting the milestones we have collectively achieved to create a more pollinator-friendly future. The IPI has encouraged the development and implementation of numerous national and regional pollinator initiatives, resulting in positive impacts on the ground.
Many activities contribute to fostering a pollinator-friendly environment around the world to conserve multiple species. These activities include the adoption of enabling policies and strategies, field-level implementation, taxonomic information on pollinators and citizen science, civil society and private sector engagement, and monitoring, research, and assessment. The development of guidance, protocols, codes of conduct, and tools by FAO and other partners offer great support to the implementation of IPI.
Over the last 25 years, together, we have made significant progress thanks to the ongoing efforts from stakeholders, including governments, international organizations, farmers, indigenous peoples and local communities, youth leaders, researchers, NGOs, the private sector, and civil society. However, we must all continue working on the protection of bees, flies, butterflies, beetles, bats, birds, primates, and other pollinator species.
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopts a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach that aligns with and supports the implementation of the IPI, offering a pathway to reach biodiversity targets and goals on a global scale. Let’s build on the momentum to strengthen the conservation and sustainable use of pollinators!
There are many ways you can contribute to the safeguarding of pollinators to ensure productive and sustainable agriculture, healthy and diverse ecosystems, and ultimately, life on Earth. Below, you will find assets to get you involved in the celebrations.
