The CBD Secretariat encourages all Parties to the Convention and all organizations, that deal in some way with the issue, to organize digital activities and events to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. Organizations are invited to take advantage of the day, to raise public awareness and to showcase their work on biodiversity, related to our theme, "Our solutions are in nature".

If you are an individual you can also organize an activity yourself in your community, here are some ideas. Every person can make a difference!

Please help us share your International Day for Biological Diversity celebrations by emailing secretariat@cbd.int.

Description

Different activities were either held or initiated on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity to raise awareness on the importance of biodiversity and calling for urgent action for the preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. A non-exhaustive overview is available here.

In particular, we wish to draw your attention to the movement “Together For Biodiversity” (French: “EnsemblePourLaBiodiversité – Dutch: “SamenVoorBiodiversiteit”) and campaign Save biodiversity, together and now! (French: “Sauvons la biodiversité, ensemble et maintenant!” – Dutch: “Red de biodiversiteit, samen en nu!”) that were launched on the 22nd of May, and for which relaunches are planned in September 2020 and February 2021, making a strong statement to decision-makers and delegates to the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention.

The Belgian National Focal Point to the Convention on Biological Diversity wishes to seize this opportunity to thank all the partners of the movement and other actors for their past and future efforts to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the need to take action.

WWF India's Model Conference of Parties (MCOP1): Building Citizens for Tomorrow

WWF India in partnership with MoEFCC, NBA, UNDP and UNEP is launching the first of its kind, digital 'MODEL CONFERENCE OF PARTIES 2020 (MCOP) ' on May 22nd and 23rd as part of the International Day for Biological Diversity.

At MCoP2020, students from across India will represent their states and union territories as Party Delegates. These delegates will be deliberating on the theme for the conference 'Nature-based solutions to biodiversity, health and economy'.

Through various sessions the student party delegates will gain an understanding of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) and the process of multi-country engagement and deliberations during a Conference of Parties (COP). Experts from the field of biodiversity, education and conservation will deep dive into nature's linkages with human well being and sustainable development emphasising upon the need for actions to bend the curve of nature loss.

The state party delegates will be deliberating and negotiating on key priority areas to set the targets for biodiversity conservation at the state and national level. The outputs from the MCOP will also be shared with the MOEFCC as a contribution towards the development of India's position for a strong post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

Symposium to commemorate the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity Ishikawa, Kanazawa: 10 Years of Initiatives and the Next 10 Years on Sustainable Biodiversity

At the 10th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity held in Aichi Prefecture in 2010, the Aichi Targets, consisting of 20 targets for protecting biodiversity, were adopted. We have set 2011-2020 as the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity, and we have been working together with the international and local communities to achieve these Aichi targets. The United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies in Sustainability (UNU) Ishikawa/Kanazawa Operating Unit, together with partners in Ishikawa and Kanazawa, has been promoting the mainstreaming of biodiversity to achieve the Aichi Targets by connecting local efforts with the international community.

To commemorate the International Day for Biodiversity on May 22, 2020, in the year of the one decade milestone, we will review the activities of Ishikawa, where the kick-off symposium for the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity was held, and consider how to tackle biodiversity and build a sustainable region for the next decade.

Description

Learn about the Peruvian Plantcutter: What to do?

the situation of the plantcutter and its habitat is parlous. Official threat categories become academic for those working day-to-day with the species, given that these appear not to galavanise official action. From the field, it looks unlikely that any kind of top-down conservation plan will be implemented. And every day, more of the plantcutter’s habitat is destroyed. It is probably not hyperbole to say that no Peruvian Plantcutter now lives more than 20 m from some evidence of human activity, be it a road, track, oil pipeline, house, pylon, plantation, farmland, pig farm, cattle, goats, logging impact, charcoal production site, fly-tipping site or wind turbine.

As there are fewer sites for the Plantcutter and those sites are being slowly degraded, the obvious recommendation would be to protect remaining sites wherever possible. However, some sites (mainly in La Libertad and Lambayeque) are so small – merely a few hectares – that they do not present realistic opportunities for effective conservation activities.

Solving Crisis: Ecosystem-based Solutions to Biodiversity Loss and Links to COVID19 Pandemic

The COVID- 19 crisis has resulted in unprecedented suffering for people across the world including the most vulnerable, among which, children. Apart from its effects on human health, the crisis has also struck us at a time where momentum on biodiversity and nature-based solutions were on the rise. Societal movements, among which youth groups, had mainstreamed biological diversity issues on the agenda of decision-makers across all levels of governance and private sector especially this year. 2020 was supposed to be the year where we ramp ambition and successfully launch into the decade of action until the pandemic struck. While we await for the curve to flatten and these difficult times to pass, we will still have to steer through biodiversity and the consequences of the pandemic.

Webinar on “Biodiversity and Preventing Future Pandemics”

The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) and the ASEAN Secretariat is pleased to invite the media to participate in this online event

The COVID-19 pandemic has been changing the world, creating enormous impacts on urban and rural areas. In the wake of the pandemic, calls for ecosystem-based adaptation and solutions, and ending illegal wildlife trade are being emphasised.

Despite restrictions on movements in most of the ASEAN region, the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) continue to engage relevant ASEAN Sectoral Bodies and the general public in its agenda to mainstream biodiversity within and across sectors and disciplines through online platforms. In the weeks leading to this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2020, the ACB is drumming up its communication efforts through online-only campaigns. With the theme “Our solutions are in nature,” the observance of the International Day for Biological Diversity will focus on the need for the global community to re-examine its relationship with nature.

Online Premiere of The Lost Forest

The short film documentary was commissioned by the Nobel Peace Prize Foundation and made by Grain Media. The series represents five of the last Peace Prizes and how the awarding of such a prize has affected work in the field. We represent the Climate Change Award.  It is film of inspiration and hope for future generations.

An international team of scientists and explorers, lead by Dr Julian Bayliss, go on an extraordinary mission in Mozambique to reach a forest that no human has set foot in. The team, including some of the world’s foremost climate change experts, aims to collect data from the forest to help in our understanding of how climate change is affecting our planet. But the forest sits atop a mountain, and to reach it, the team must first climb a sheer 100m wall of rock. The scientists’ work is based on research conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

The Campaign for Nature- 30 Days of Hope

The Campaign for Nature is a partnership of the Wyss Campaign for Nature, National Geographic Society, and a growing coalition of more than 100 conservation organizations around the world that is calling on policymakers to commit to a science-driven, ambitious new deal for nature at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Kunming, China, in 2020.

Specifically, the Campaign for Nature is calling on world leaders to:

  • commit to protecting at least 30 percent of the planet by 2030;
  • help mobilize financial resources to ensure protected areas are properly managed; and,
