Stakeholder Open Webinar - Sustainable Agriculture -- 23 March 2021

The focus of this webinar will be on the theme of “Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Transition: Linkages to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework”

This is the second in a series of four virtual webinars intended to provide an opportunity for Parties and stakeholders to informally explore key concepts and issues related to the development of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

This webinar will begin with a context-setting presentation that explores the key linkages between sustainable agriculture and the transition to sustainable food systems, and linkages to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Stakeholder Open Webinar Series

The first Stakeholder Open Webinar in this series explored the  linkages between climate change and biodiversity

The webinars provide a space for participants to explore issues, exchange views, and enhance their understanding of key topics. In response to suggestions from stakeholders, the second webinar will follow a new format that will help focus the discussion and enhance the speaking opportunities for all participants.

The webinars are not negotiating sessions and the views expressed during them will be considered informal.

The sessions, and the views expressed in them, will not be considered part of the official work of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and will not be directly reflected in official documentation related to this process.

During each session, Parties and stakeholders will have an equal opportunity to speak. The webinars will be recorded and made available on the CBD website.

First Stakeholder Open Webinar – Exploring Linkages Between Climate Change and Biodiversity

Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

Proposed Agenda

Moderator
Ms. Jyoti Mathur-Filipp, Director, Implementation and Support Division, SCBD

Welcome by the WG2020 Co-Chairs, Mr. Francis Ogwal (Uganda) and Mr. Basile van Havre (Canada)

Joint context-setting presentation drawing from the expertise of specialists in these areas:

  • Maryam Rahmanian, Co-chair of International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food)
  • Alison Blay-Palmer, UNESCO Chair on Food, Biodiversity and Sustainability Studies

Selected discussants representing a range of stakeholders and groups will be invited to react to the presentation and discuss a focus question for consideration by participants in the open discussion.

  1. Ms. Tammi Jonas, President, Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance/International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty (IPC)
  2. Mr. Eric Soubeiran – VP for Nature and Water Cycles, Danone
  3. Ma. Estrella “Esther” Penunia, Secretary General of the Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA)

The questions will be along the following lines:

  • How to ensure that the post-2020 global biodiversity framework speaks to agriculture sectors, from small to industrial farmers, fisherfolk, livestock keepers, etc. rather than to the environmental community alone?
  • How to strengthen the interdependencies of supply-side and demand-side/ food production and consumption patterns in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (for example, links between targets 8, 9, 15 of the current zero draft of the framework and the GBO-5 transitions on sustainable agriculture and sustainable food systems)?
  • How can the post-2020 global biodiversity framework influence policy areas than can boost responsible investments and re-direct harmful subsidies in support of nature-based solutions?
  • What enablers are needed to reap the co-benefits (such as, supporting more resilient farmer livelihoods, promoting more inclusive and sustainable growth, promoting healthier diets, etc.) of food systems transitions that not only support biodiversity but use it as a solution?

Parties and stakeholders to provide views, engage with experts and discussants and respond to the focus questions.
The Co-Chairs, invited expert, and invited discussants to provide responses as needed.

Co-Chairs to summarize and indicate next steps.
