The Global Taxonomy Initiative Forum 2020

The Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) Forum (2 to 4 December 2020, online)

The Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) Forum facilitated by the Secretariat, was held online from 2 to 4 December 2020 in collaboration with the co-hosting institution, the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin, and the Government of Germany, with financial support from the Japan Biodiversity Fund.

The three-day GTI Forum consisted of an opening symposium on, “Best practices and challenges of the GTI in achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets”, followed by two days of workshops. The workshops focused on the following themes:

  • The GTI 2021-2030 activities to support Parties’ achievement of the post-2020 biodiversity targets; and
  • The GTI 2021-2030 activities to enhance education, public engagement and collaboration between governments and taxonomic institutions.

Outcomes

Following the GTI Forum, participants agreed on a joint “Call for action on recognizing the critical role of taxonomy to underpin transformative change within the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Technical Series # 96: The Global Taxonomy Initiative in Support of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

Technical Series #96 contains outcomes of the GTI Forum 2020 held virtually from 2 to 4 December 2020 and highlights the scientific tools, capacity development activities and services available to Parties with advice given by taxonomic experts an will inform discussions at the third meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-3), when it meets in 2021.
